"The empire is in decline, the culture is in decay, the democracy is in trouble, financial markets near collapse," said Princeton Professor Cornel West. "It's almost Biblical. And you can imagine what the black brothers and sisters in the barbershops and beauty salons say: 'Right when the thing is about to go under, they hand it over to the black man.'"
I found this quote in an article talking about cautiously optimistic blacks expecting an Obama victory Tuesday. I have to say, I was a bit insulted by it. This is the racial pride, dare I say arrogance, that blacks exude to motivate themselves. The reason I say this is because I used to say this kind of stuff myself. Who knows, I may still say it on occasion. When you think that society is still down on you, you need to make statements like this to make yourself feel better. Blacks, in an effort to motivate themselves, fall back on things like "we built this country," in reference to slavery, or how society seems to mimic or 'steal' things from black "culture" in order to be hip, popular, cool, etc. The way we talk, dance, the music, the dress, and so on. While there is truth in it all, blacks don't often look at it as evidence of the acceptance and inclusion they say they desire. They see it as one more thing stolen from them over the past 400 years. Cornel West doesn't seem to realize that the fact he is a professor at Princeton is an example that blacks have already "made it." As I have said ad nauseum, when will we have reached the "mountain top?" We practically own the entertainment and sports industries. We have CEOs, entrepreneurs, high ranking political figures, etc. And now, we may have the first black President (well, actually, the second if you count Bill Clinton ). But, it still won't be enough. As talk show host, Tavis Smiley, says in this article, the "work begins" with an Obama victory. My God, excuse my language, the work begins?
WHAT DOES EQUALITY LOOK LIKE????
As long as blacks make up about 15% of the population, we are never going to be 100% of everything! And even if we did, is that equality? No, it then becomes unfair to every other ethnic group. Because of the progress blacks have made, the pendulum has started to swing to the other side. Now, we have a group called the "Angry White Male." Good grief. I guess the hunters have become the hunted. If something negative comes at the expense of whites then it is deemed okay because of all the racism blacks and other minorities have endured throughout the years. Is not discrimination of any kind wrong? But, that is what happens when you have all these separate groups that all want "equality." Not only is the definition of "equality" never defined, the list of those claiming to be victims of inequality never ends. Blacks, AWMs, illegal immigrants, homosexuals, feminists, members of non-Christian religions and on and on. The strange thing is that Barack Obama claims that if he is elected, as one woman in the article exclaimed, he will bring us all together. Please. He is the most liberal voting senator in Congress. Not a shining example of inclusion. Obama has been labeled by his critics as a socialist. That he plans on taking from the rich to give to the poor in an effort to create equality. Perhaps. But, it isn't just his economic policy that is of concern. It is not difficult to make everybody equal when you tear down those that have achieved the most. When you tear something down, everything is equally destroyed. Motivating people to achieve is a lot harder because it is not natural.
It is human nature to want to benefit off the efforts of others. i.e. slavery. So, when Barack Obama offers his form of "change," those who see themselves as victims will eagerly jump on board at the expense of others. If you have lost money during the latest stock market turmoil, then you have no problem taking from others in order to regain your loss. The message of Obama is a message of equality. But, it is not one encouraging people to be the best they can be. It is one that brings the achievers down to the level of the underachiever. The one that brings the free down to the level of the oppressed. And let's not forget West's reference to the Bible in his discussion of Obama. He, in no uncertain terms, equates Obama to be a "savior" here to rescue the empire, culture, democracy and financial markets. The fact that all these things are in jeopardy is exactly because of the "equality" Obama represents. The reason the American "empire" is in decline is because we have gotten away from the foundations that have made this country the envy of the world. It is our Judeo-Christian heritage that was the basis for our culture. But, it is the liberals and, dare I say Democrats, who advocate destroying those foundations. Where do the majority of abortionists, homosexuals, anti-semites, race-baters, atheists, anti-Christians, America-haters, anti-capitalists and politically correct crowd reside? It is in the Democratic Party. Yes, this is change, but it is not change I can believe in. You don't level the playing field by setting the country back 200 years.
If you want to talk about a Savior who brings change and equality, you need to look no further than Jesus Christ. God leveled the playing field for all humanity. We all fall short of the glory of God; dead in sin, separated from the life of God. But, in His love, He gave us hope in Christ. God raised us up to His level by sending Christ down to ours. Now, all who believe in Him have been given everything they need for life and godliness. The Lord didn't tear down others in order give us hope. He is our hope, living out His life from within every believer. And we go throughout our lives teaching others about God's offer of salvation by expressing the love we have received with others. It is in that way that each individual is motivated to be who they already are in Christ. God doesn't take things away from others in order to build us up. He teaches us that we already have all we desire and thus those things we thought we desired from the world begin to fall away in comparison to His riches. God desires that we all be one in Christ. Barack Obama is not anybody's savior. No man is. This country was built, and sustained, by individuals who reached their maximum potential through reliance on, and trust in, the Bible and through faith in Jesus Christ. It can only be maintained by continuing that trend. If we are going to hand anything over to anybody, hand it over to Jesus Christ. We must ask ourselves one question:
"When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?" Psalm 11:3
