Q: Thank you for the answer. :) However, if I join an opposition party just because I don`t like the policy of the current running party and the policy is not against the bible. I just want a change as the policy is not doing good to the country in the long run. So in this case am I wrong to do so? Am I not obeying the government? Am I not obeying God?
Please enlighten. Thanks.
A: As I tried to express in my previous answer, you are free to do whatever you want. If you want to join the opposition party because you don't like the policies of the current government and believe them to be detrimental to your country, by all means, go ahead. If you permit me to be so bold as to restate your question, but it sounds like you are asking, "Would God consider it a sin if I were to join the party directly opposed to my country's current ruling party?" The answer is "No, He would not." Furthermore, even if it was a sin, God is not holding it against you. All your sins, past, present and future, were forgiven forever at the cross when Jesus Christ died. "God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them (2 Corinthians 5:19)." You have been set free. If it were against the Bible for you to do anything then you would, by definition, not be free, but under the law. The question to ask is "What is your motivation for what you do?"
For example, I would consider myself to be in the "opposition" party here in the United States. I did not vote for our current President and do not support the policies of his Administration. Similar to you, I believe their policies to be detrimental to the country and to our standing as a world leader. Therefore, I exercise my rights to voice that opposition in a constructive manner as best I can. My motivation is to preserve what I believe to be the values and system of government that has made the United States a great country with all its freedoms. And it just so happens those values and system of government the country is based on comes from the pages of the Bible. My focus as well as yours should be to always match up what we support, promote and defend up against the Bible as best we can. And we should keep in mind what the Bible tells us about our present struggle in this world. "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12)."
The policies a government promotes are the byproducts of what those in charge, and those who support them, believe in their hearts. As Christians we all want to see freedom, both religiously and physically, for ourselves, our countrymen and for mankind. And the best place to effect that change is from within. That is why, as Christians, we preach the Gospel in hopes that as a person responds to Christ's offer of salvation, He will begin to change these people from the inside out. And when you begin to change from the inside, what you promote, support and defend will be more consistent with a Christian worldview. Think of how Christians are changed, after salvation, as they put off their "old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:22-24)."As we become the new self our attitudes change. Once that happens, it is only a matter of time until the policies and laws installed by a government reflect that change. In the meantime, you have to stand for those values in the face of the opposition to them. I admit, as an American, it is a lot easier to stand for the faith in a society that is free. Sometimes you have to fight for what is right, if nothing more than to preserve it for future generations.
If you can control someone's behavior you don't necessarily control their heart. But, if you control their heart their behavior will eventually follow. However, often times before you can share the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which will change a person’s heart, you have to find the opportunity in which to share the message. That may entail taking a stand politically in order to create an environment in which to share the message. And it places you in direct confrontation to those in charge. Therefore, take heart in what you are doing and don’t worry about whether what you are doing is going against God’s Word. Do not be surprised if you stand in opposition to a government that seemingly doesn’t exemplify Christian values. “We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one (1 John 5:19).” But, while Satan may have control of the world in the future it will be under the control of Jesus Christ. And when that happens “the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6).” Be encouraged my friend.
