Why Jesus?

Q: How can I tell my friend why Jesus came, his purpose, and evidence to prove that he came?

A: Why Jesus came and His purpose for doing so?

When Adam was created the Bible records that "the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being (Genesis 2:7)." God breathed His life into Adam and he came alive. God then warned Adam. "And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die (Genesis 2:16-17)." Unfortunately, Adam did eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, as recorded in Genesis 3, and he died. However, Adam didn't die physically. It is recorded that Adam lived 930 years (Genesis 5:5). The death Adam suffered was a spiritual death. The life of God, breathed into Adam at creation was removed. Adam did not have any children prior to his sin. Therefore, all mankind, including you and I, are born into this world in the image of Adam. We are dead to God, but alive to the world in sin.

In God's love, He desired to once again indwell mankind again and make us alive to Him. But, before He could do that He had to deal with the sin issue that caused Him to remove His life in the first place. The Bible records that the "wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23)." However, there has never been a man who had a life to give that would satisfy God as payment for our sins. That is where Jesus enters the picture. Jesus, being God in the flesh, was the only man born with a life to give that satisfy the penalty of death we all deserve. His death purchased "eternal redemption (Hebrews 9:12)." Therefore, the sin issue is over between God and man. Now, God was able to offer His life again, as a free gift to all to who accept Jesus Christ by faith, because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The life we now have is an eternal life because there is no sin that can ever cause it to leave again because of the death of Jesus Christ. It is a life that will carry you through this life, past your physical death, and on into eternity.

The purpose of Jesus Christ was to save the lost through His death, burial and resurrection. As the Bible records, "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost (Luke 19:10)." The Gospel of Jesus Christ is sin, death, forgiveness and eternal life. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 records this truth. "For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures..." No man could do what Jesus did for us and offers us in Himself. That is why He said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)." No other figure in history could for us what Jesus did. That is why He is the only Savior of mankind.

The evidence that proved He came...

Jesus Christ is not a myth, but a historical fact. The mathematical, archaeological, prophetic and statistical evidence of His supernatural birth, life, death and resurrection is overwhelming. The first question to ask your friend is "What evidence are you willing to accept?" If they answer that, then you can point them in the direction of the resources that can best help answer their question as well as whatever evidence that has convinced you. Their are numerous resources that can assist you in this quest. A few are www.equip.org, www.answersingenesis.org as well as your local Christian bookstore. They will have apologetic resources that can assist you in answering your friend. People to People's online store may have some resources as well. I know they have some that will help you in further your understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and who you are in Him if you have accepted Him as your savior. Be blessed.
