Scripture says...

Q: I really need some advice. My partner of almost 2 years has a brother who is able to see spirits and has been since he was a child. Instead of turning to God, he believes in astrology and psychics and spirit guides. I know this is witchcraft and i try not get involved with it. About a week ago he said he could see about seven spirits living in my partners room (even saying some were attached to my partner) which were all apparently evil. This really concerns me and due to lack of knowledge my partner thinks seeing a psychic will give him guidance for the situation. He believes in god but unlike me hasn't grown up in christian schools and a christian family who go to church etc. I told him i don't think a psychic will help and that god is the answer but i really don't know what to do myself. how can i protect myself when i stay at his house and what are some ways that we can get rid of these spirits the right and safe way? Thanks :)

A: Thank you for your question. I am not sure if you, your "partner" or the individual you are asking about are Christians or not. However, belief in astrology, psychics and spirit guides are not of God, but of Satan. Such practices are highly condemned by the Bible because they consume an individual and get them totally focused on coincidental and anecdotal experiences. And worst of all, the individual involved in them only ends up relying on their own understanding of the circumstances in order to try and explain what is going on. There is little or no desire to focus on the things of God, specifically Jesus Christ, and that is exactly what Satan and these evil spirits want to happen. You are correct in your assessment that what the gentleman is involved in is witchcraft. Witchcraft means the practice of magic or sorcery. What does the Bible say about magic or sorcery? "You must never sacrifice your sons or daughters by burning them alive, practice black magic, be a fortuneteller, witch, or sorcerer, cast spells, ask ghosts or spirits for help, or consult the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10-11)." This person's belief in these types of things and desire to consult someone also involved in the practice of these things goes directly against God and His Word.

The person you speak of may believe in god, but that doesn't mean he believes in the One true God of the Bible, who came to earth as Jesus Christ. If he did he would not think it beneficial to seek the counsel of a psychic to guide him in this situation. The Bible says, "Blessed is the person who does not follow the advice of wicked people, take the path of sinners, or join the company of mockers (Psalm 1:1)." One could say that "cursed is the person who does follow the advice of wicked people." Why? Because psychics and people involved in witchcraft and sorcery are wicked people who do not know God, much less Jesus Christ as their savior. In many ways, to seek their guidance is going to the source of that which is causing all the evil spirits to invade this person's life in the first place. Why go to a representative of Satan to get advice on how to deal with other representatives of Satan? It is foolishness to do so. That is why Jesus Christ said, "So if Satan rebels against himself and is divided, he cannot last. That will be the end of him (Mark 3:26)." To seek the advice of the wicked is to expect the devil to tell you how to rebel against himself and be divided. That simply will not help this individual overcome these evil spirits. There is no way to "get rid of these spirits" in totality, safely or otherwise. The only answer that will help this person is faith in Jesus Christ.

When a person accepts Jesus Christ as their savior, the very life of God, in the presence of the Holy Spirit, comes to indwell that individual for eternity. Now that God is living inside that person they have the means by which they can deal with evil spirits and Satan. In the Gospel of Luke, we can read the account of Jesus Christ being tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Jesus was hungry and Satan tempted Him to turn a stone into bread (Luke 4:3). Satan tempted Jesus by offering Him all the kingdoms of the world (Luke 4:6). Then Satan took Jesus to the highest point of the Temple in Jerusalem and dared Him to throw Himself off in order to tempt Him to call on the angels of God to protect Him (Luke 4:9-11). Satan eventually gave up and left Jesus alone (Luke 4:13). Why did Satan give up tempting Jesus? If you read the account, every time Jesus was tempted by Satan He responded with, "Scripture says..." It was the truth of God's word that caused Satan to stop tempting Jesus. It is no different with Christians. Not only do Christians have God indwelling them, but they have the truth of His Word, the Bible, to help guide them and confront the challenges of Satan. That is why James said, "So place yourselves under God’s authority. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you (James 4:7)." When you allow God and His Word to guide you, His truth will aid you in resisting the lies and harassment of Satan and his evil spirits because they know they cannot come against the truth of the Lord and succeed.

You mentioned that you had "grown up in Christian schools and a Christian family." Then you might be familiar with Ephesians 6:10-12. "Finally, receive your power from the Lord and from his mighty strength. Put on all the armor that God supplies. In this way you can take a stand against the devil’s strategies. This is not a wrestling match against a human opponent. We are wrestling with rulers, authorities, the powers who govern this world of darkness, and spiritual forces that control evil in the heavenly world." You "receive your power from the Lord" when you have accepted Jesus Christ as your savior. His armor that we put on is the truth of His Word and the knowledge of who we are as Christians. Satan or his evil spirits can try to influence us, but they cannot control us. However, in many ways we can "get rid of them" and cause them to "run away" by immersing ourselves in God's Word, the Bible, in order to identify, withstand and defeat Satan's attacks on us with God's truth. Remember, Satan "comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10a)," One of the ways he attempts to do this is by engaging in the activities you are describing in your question. But Jesus comes so that Christians "will have life and so that they will have everything they need (John 10:10b)." It is in that life that we are able to submit to God and cause Satan, and his evil spirits, to "run away." All three of you should focus on Jesus Christ and His truth, not the evil spirits of Satan and their deception, and you will have the means by which to overcome the evil spirits. May God continue to reveal to you the truth of His Word and the salvation offered in Jesus Christ.
