In referencing the Christian heritage of the United States,
a prominent individual said that “whatever we once were, we are no longer.” In
other words, they believe that we are no longer a Christian nation. However, if
you recall, in the days and weeks following the September 11, 2001, terrorist
attack, there were countless public displays of religious faith; particularly
those displays of faith associated with Christianity. But, it wore off quickly
and the true colors of people soon resurfaced. Now, as the 12th
anniversary of the attack is upon us, we have seen godlessness take root. One
Christian website puts in focus. “A gunman opens fire in a Connecticut
elementary school, killing 20 children. An abortionist in Philadelphia is
convicted of gruesome infanticide. The Supreme Court strikes down a
section of the Defense of Marriage Act defining marriage as only between a man
and a woman. A memorial vigil is
held for a dead elk in Colorado, but when an abortion-restricting bill is
considered in the Texas Senate, an angry mob chants, “Hail, Satan.”” Many Christians compare
what we see going on today in the country and much of the Western world as
being similar to the days of Noah where the Bible says, “the Lord saw
that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (Genesis 6:5).” I personally do not see that it will get any
better anytime soon, if at all. This is not to be defeatist, but a realist. The
scripture says that “But even
if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has
blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of
Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).”
The unbelievers who permeate the leadership of this country and many countries
worldwide are perishing because Satan, the god of this age, has blinded them to
the truth. So, why would I be hopeful that things will turnaround when Satan
and those deceived by him are in control of this country and world? But, take
heart. God is the one who allows these leaders to be in the positions they are
in. And as their decisions lead to the destruction of society at its core, we
Christians can be ready to meet the people being destroyed by it all with the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. That same Christian website concludes with the
following: “As Christians proclaim the truths of the
gospel and people’s hearts and minds are transformed through repentance, they
will act and think in accordance with God’s Word (Romans 12:1–2). As more and more
come to faith in Christ, the culture can be transformed into one where
righteousness is the standard rather than every man doing what is right in his
own eyes (Judges 21:25). Our hope is in
Christ and His glorious gospel.” While we remember an American tragedy, never
forget the hope of Jesus Christ that still remains.
