Itching Ears

Last week I wrote about a pastor who quoted Deuteronomy 28:8, out of context in my opinion, in order to inspire his followers. What I didn't write about were the questions I asked and the response I received from some of his followers. I would like to share some of that with you in order to see how there is an element within the body of Christ that are not interested in the truth, much less reasoning from the scriptures. Here is what I wrote followed by some of the responses:

"Pastor... how come you don't talk about the condition for receiving these blessings; full obedience to the law of God; Deuteronomy 28:1,9,13? And how come you don't post about the curses for disobedience to all God commands; Deuteronomy 28:15-68? Nobody will ever receive these blessings of the flesh, not even the nation of Israel for which these verses were written to, because nobody will be fully obedient to the law of God. As Christians we already have every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3) as an inheritance of our faith. We should get to understand the blessings in the spirit we already have through faith in Jesus instead of chasing after blessings of the flesh we will never receive through our disobedient works. Be blessed."

  • "..he (meaning me) is the kind that sneaks in the church and pretty soon people are without a church .
  • "I hope you are not a Paster (sic) you are putting a stumbling block especially baby christion (sic)
  • "The message of Pastor ... cannot be comprehend (sic) by visual senses, He spks (sic) in divine revelation...  I still don't expect u to understand (sic)...
  • Don't scare people out of the kingdom."
There is one clear theme in these responses; truth doesn't matter. A friend of mind once said, "There are people who would rather keep their beliefs than know the truth." This is a perfect example of this. I noticed how nobody who addressed me ever once attempted to answer my questions. Instead, they only used the opportunity to post their beliefs and insult me in the process. Furthermore, this is a sad example of people following man at the cost of the truth. I am reminded of Paul's words when he scolded the church in Corinth for being immature in their faith. "You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings? What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task (1 Corinthians 3:3-5)." That is what I see here to some degree; man-following, worldly Christians, immature in their faith at best, who just want someone to show them how to get their flesh blessed and will strike down anybody who questions it.

Furthermore, Paul would also write, "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3)." I guess that time has come. This small bit of interaction, with people who are supposedly my brothers and sisters in Christ, only proves Paul correct. Ultimately, the problem is not the pastor, but the people who support him. He tickles their itching ears with out of context scripture, designed to elicit an emotional response from them and they will hang on to it because it made them feel good. Then when someone like myself questions what they believe I am attacked like a virus. There is not much you can do in these situations other than try and get people to question authority, "test the Spirits," if you will. But, when you have millions of people propping up one man's ministry, at the expense of the truth of God's Word, I can only hope that whatever light I shined into their world will attract a truth seeker to come to the full knowledge of Jesus Christ, who He is and all they have through faith in Him. Stand firm. We can either hold tightly to the truth of God's Word or be blown around by every wind of doctrine because it makes us feel good.
