We're Off To See The Wizard

“Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread." Isaiah 8:12-13

There is a growing movement that calls itself Q or QAnon. According to the internet, "QAnon is a far-right conspiracy theory detailing a supposed secret plot by an alleged "deep state" against U.S. President Donald Trump and his supporters." Whether this is an accurate definition of the movement I cannot say, but from my experience with them, it is fairly accurate. The only thing I would change is that the plot of the so-called "deep state" is directed more at the citizens of the United States and the world rather than just at the President and his supporters. Many of these people who support this "QAnon" movement proport to be Christians. Their apparent goal is to reveal the "truth" about what is really going on in society and politics. While there is nothing wrong with a search for the truth, my concern is there is no true forethought given to what the result of all these revelations will be in the end. In the movie, "The Wizard of Oz," Dorothy, the lead character, goes on an adventure in the Land of Oz. To make a long story short, she and her companions eventually get to the Emerald City where they find this "Wizard of Oz." As the story unfolds, "the Wizard stalls in fulfilling his promises until Toto (Dorothy's dog) pulls back a curtain and exposes the "Wizard" as a middle-aged man operating machinery and speaking into a microphone." Eventually, Dorothy finds her way "home" where it is determined that her experience was nothing more than a dream. My point in saying all of this is that this entire conspiracy about the "deep state," who they are, and what are their plans for the United States and the world appears to be another trip to the "Land of Oz" to find the "wizard." Even if the goal of QAnon is realized and the proverbial curtain is pulled back to reveal that we have all been misled by a group of powerful "middle-aged" elitists with world domination as their goal, what will be the ultimate outcome of all of it? In effect, we are still in the "Land of Oz" with the "Wizard" and no way home. Besides, all of this supposed revelation won't stop evil in this world or the corruption that stems from it. There will always be another evil to go after and expose. All that will be left are people wandering around lost with no direction. Free, but lost. In time, the lies that have been exposed will just be replaced by different ones with new "wizards" behind a different curtain.

In Isaiah 8:12, the prophet uses the word conspiracy to describe the actions of the enemies of the Jews. It has been said that the word “conspiracy” does not "necessarily imply treason within the state. It may be used of an external coalition threatening the integrity of the commonwealth." Whichever is correct, you see how it parallels the idea of a "deep state" motivated to overthrow the country. However, Isaiah switches focus on what should truly be feared; the Lord Almighty! In the book of Genesis, we read where "The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (Genesis 6:5)." Therefore, He wiped out everybody on the earth except for Noah and his family. Not long afterward, albeit on a lesser scale, God "rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven. And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground (Genesis 19:24-25)." Finally, God took it upon Himself to deal with the wickedness of man. Rather than destroy mankind or a couple of cities, He "destroyed" Himself by dying on the cross. "But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5)." Do not miss the fact that each and every time God executed judgment, the evil that spawned the wickedness needing to be punished returned. To this day, despite all that God did for us in the person of Jesus Christ, we have that same wickedness fueling the corruption and deception that groups like QAnon are determined to unmask. However, if all they do is reveal the evil and don't replace it with the preaching of the Gospel, what good is it? Just like the Jews demanded Moses return them to Egypt to be enslaved again or like a dog returning to its vomit, "a fool repeats his foolishness (Proverbs 26:11)." What good is it to expose an enemy if you don't try and make them an ally? What good is it to set people free if you don't give them a place of refuge? The purpose of a Christian's life is to preach the Gospel. In the Wizard of Oz, the wizard revealed to Dorothy that, like her, he was also from the state of Kansas. And that is something to be remembered. All these "deep state" operatives, whoever they may be, are people just like those seeking to unmask them. They need Jesus just like we all do. If you're going to pull back the curtain to reveal their sin, give them something in exchange. Give them Jesus Christ.
