Is Atonement Propitiation?

Day of Atonement:

A day on which Israel fasted, cleansed the sanctuary of impurity, and dealt with their sin through blood rituals and sending a goat into the wilderness. Took place on the 10th day of the seventh month.

Propitiation:

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ reconciles believers to God, cleanses them, and makes them righteous before Him.

Key Scriptures:

Leviticus 16:1-34

Hebrews 10:1-4

Why do Christians use atonement and propitiation interchangeably when talking about the forgiveness of sins?

How does the way Christians approach forgiveness resemble how Jews dealt with sin in the Old Covenant?
